Independence: Being able to rely on yourself and have common sense to solve your problems. Also, knowing when to ask for help is a sign of maturity.

ya after i watched plenty of western(american) movies or tv series, i figure that there are some "american values" that i admire in deed, like the article metioned they are willing to try, and fight what they wantto the end. also the optimism and perserverance like "i won't be destoried!" is what i need to learn in my life. maybe taiwanese tend to be kinda passsive or social-the asian characteristics-that i think it should not be emphasized too much to our next generation. i hope taiwan can open its mind totally but still remain some unique cultures some day. thanks for sharing this article, i wonder where did you quote.
